About Us

The Brooklyn Vicariate Office of Black Catholic Concerns (formerly the Office of Black Ministry) is the only canonically designated office in the Diocese of Brooklyn to act as an administrative, advocative, and representative body for all those in Brooklyn and Queens who identify as Black Catholics; that is, men and women of color who profess the Catholic faith with direct African diasporan lineage and heritage.

Our regular responsibilities include:

  • curating liturgies that speak to our culture and distinct devotion to the Eucharist
  • managing events that advance our community and faith-based goals
  • working with our Black Catholic clergy to help better serve the faithful inside and outside the Church
  • helping to uplift and center the narratives of our Black Catholic youth
  • speaking on behalf of our communities throughout Brooklyn and Queens to help combat all instances of racial and/or ethnic discrimination in our diocese

Under the direction of our Vicar, Father Alonzo Q. Cox, our tasks are aided and amplified through the work of our Advisory Board, which meets several times throughout the year to determine the most effective ways to carry out these and other initiatives.
